Made in Colorado: Otter Box

MADE IN COLORADO: OTTERBOX

Have you ever cracked your phone screen? If you’re an iPhone user that crack is like getting $800 and flushing it down the toilet while a lone tear streaks your face. Otter Box has provided a sleek and stylish solution to our human clumsiness.

Otter Box is a privately owned company based in Fort Collins, CO that produces water, shock, and drop resistant cases for mobile devices. Additionally Otter Box offers a host of other products aimed towards the outdoor enthusiast. The company was founded in 1998 as a manufacture of water resistant boxes and device specific smartphone and tablet cases for outdoor adventurers. Like any smart company, Otter Box has continued to grow and expand its offering to cater to multiple types of users.

If you want to see social media done well, just look at Otter Box. With over 71k followers, Otter Box has done a great job not only catering to their primary outdoor market but newer urbanites who are looking for sleek design with proper functionality and phone protection. Immediately upon entering any of Otter Box’s social channels you are greeted with who they are and what they do. Otter Box has a clearly defined voice, is posting regularly and the product placement within the image is subtle yet makes an impact. Additionally Otter Box is putting the emphasis on the customer which shows Otter Box is inclusive not exclusive. I could go on for a long time about how Otter Box has humanized their brand, produces engaging content, start conversations and more, but we still need to talk web (and, I am sure you are all busy people!)

Immediately upon entering Otter Box’s website you are presented with a pop up to collect an email address in exchange for 10% off your first order! This is not a new concept for product based sites but let’s take a moment and give the Otter Box marketing team a round of applause! This is a perfect way to gain new customer acquisition and additional sales but also to learn about the frequency of returning consumers! And, who doesn't want to save on a purchase they were already going to make?

The site has standard navigation with monsters menus. The layout of navigation directly helps the consumer chose their device and thus product options. Something subtle, yet impactful, is the ‘giving back’ text in pink at the top of the site; it stands out from Otter Box’s yellow, black and white brand colors. The ‘giving back’ link provides information about Otter Box’s manifesto on lasting change and ways you can get involved with the Otter Cares program.

Otter Box has made some very strategic marketing moves on their site. Under the tab ‘explore’ you can see seven different marketing campaigns and partnerships that Otter Box has. This strategy not only reduces media buying costs but also provides the customer with insight in to future of the company. Furthermore you don’t have to search for your favorite Otter Box campaign because it is all online; in fact you can become more involved. When a company is able to connect all your marketing pieces together, this is truly marketing at its finest. Otter Box has done this!

From the layout, navigation, design, content and purchasing funnel, Otter Box really excels with their website. A lot of companies could learn a thing or two! When looking at their social media marketing it is truly remarkable to watch their engaging content build communities while maintaining the integrity of the brand. Powerful self-explanatory imagery catches the eye and inspires curiosity. I honestly could have written a longer post with a lot more detail about Otter Box's marketing but just looking at two elements of their digital strategy, you can see their marketing team is on it! Well done Otter Box!
